How to Mount a TV Over a Fireplace

February 2026 — ABQ TV Mount

Mounting a TV above the fireplace is one of the most popular requests we get — and one of the most misunderstood. Done right, it looks stunning. Done wrong, it can damage your TV, strain your neck, and create a wiring nightmare. Here's what you need to know before you start.

1. Heat Is the #1 Concern

Electronics and heat don't mix. Wood-burning fireplaces and some gas fireplaces can push significant heat upward toward the wall above. Before mounting, measure the temperature at the proposed TV location while the fireplace is running at full heat. Most TVs are rated to operate safely below 100°F (38°C). If temps exceed that, you'll need a heat shield, a recessed mantle, or a different wall altogether.

2. Viewing Angle Matters More Than You Think

The average fireplace mantle sits 4–5 feet off the floor, which often puts a mounted TV at eye level only when you're standing. When seated on a couch, you'll typically be looking up at a steep angle — which causes neck strain over time. To compensate, use a full-motion or tilting mount that lets you angle the screen downward toward your seating area.

3. Choose the Right Mount

4. Plan Your Cable Route Before You Drill

Running cables above a fireplace is tricky because the firebox often occupies the wall cavity. An experienced installer will route cables through a dedicated conduit or use a surface raceway to keep wires hidden and code-compliant. Never run standard extension cords or unrated cables through walls — it's a fire hazard and a code violation.

5. Find Solid Anchor Points

Fireplace surrounds are sometimes built with non-standard framing or stone facades that make stud-finding difficult. A professional installer will use a stud finder and, when necessary, toggle anchors rated for the TV's weight to ensure a secure mount.

Leave It to the Pros

Fireplace TV mounting is one of the most technically demanding installations we do at ABQ TV Mount. Between heat management, cable routing, and finding solid anchor points above a firebox, there's a lot that can go wrong. We handle it every day — give us a call and we'll make it look perfect.
